Planning to get orthodontic treatment in the near future? This handy guide that I’ve compiled will help you understand what to expect on your road to a beautiful smile, the supplies you will be needing and how to take care of your braces, allowing you to be prepared for a smooth orthodontic journey.
1. Let us Help You Find the Perfect Option
Thanks to the advancements in technology, there are several options that you can opt for when getting braces, such as metal or ceramic braces or Invisalign clear aligners. If you are conscious about your appearance, you can opt for ceramic braces that will match the color of your teeth or Invisalign for nearly invisible treatment!
2. Keep Your Focus on the Benefits
People often back out and do not get braces due to embarrassment issues, however, I encourage you to keep your focus on the positive side that is going to bring you greater benefits in the long run– a beautiful smile and enhanced self-confidence.
3. Find an Experienced Orthodontist
You deserve the best care! I am a board-certified orthodontist and I will help you evaluate various options to determine the best treatment for you.
4. Stocking up on Soft Foods
When you start orthodontic treatment, you may experience tenderness in the initial days, thus I recommend stocking up on some soft and cold foods for this time. Soups, shakes, smoothies, and oatmeal will be ideal choices during this period.
5. Remain Prepared for Maintenance of Your Braces
Food may get stuck in between the braces; thus you will want to brush after every meal and snack-time. Regular flossing and cleaning with a soft-bristled brush is an essential requirement with braces. So, don’t forget to stock up on some good brushes, mouthwashes, and dental flosses. Use a Waterpik at home and “swish” warm water around your mouth when dining out.
If wearing Invisalign, remove the aligners before eating. Don’t forget to put them right back in after eating and brushing!
6. Know What Foods to Avoid
There are certain foods that you need to avoid when wearing braces. Avoid all chewy, crunchy and gummy foods, such as sticky candies and toffees, as these can get trapped between the braces. My trusted team will advise what foods you need to avoid when you get braces. Don’t forget to munch on your favorite crunchy snacks and foods before your appointment!
Food restrictions do not apply to Invisalign patients.
