Do you wear braces, caps or crowns? It really doesn’t matter. These 7 fun teeth facts apply to everyone …well, almost everyone.
Fact #1: Did you know braces aren’t as young as most people think? It was invented more than 300 years ago.
We’re not the first to wear braces. Archaeologists have found mummified people who had metal bands wrapped around their teeth. Cleopatra even wore them! We certainly have come a very long way. Thanks to inventions like Invisalign, you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing you’re having orthodontic treatment – they’re almost invisible to the eye.
Fact #2: Your teeth can reveal about your life.
Let a scientist examine your teeth and he/she will be able to read part of your history. Scientists can tell the type of illnesses people suffer from and if they endured a lot of stress. Teeth can even reveal your age, where you may have lived and the type of food you eat.
Fact #3: At one time, it was common for people to use lemon juice and charcoal to clean their teeth.
Before Colgate launched its first toothpaste, in the 1890s, it was common for people to use lemon juice or charcoal to brush their teeth. These old remedies resurfaced as a trend, in modern times, as teeth whitening solutions.
(By the way, the charcoal used in today’s toothpaste brands are not same charcoal used at a barbecue pool party. The type of charcoal used is known as pure activated charcoal powders.)
If you’ve been tempted to try these home tooth care remedies – don’t – it’s not worth it. It’s like brushing your teeth with soda and sugary drinks. These so-called quick, fix teeth whiteners will wreak havoc on your tooth enamel.
Instead, use an all-natural, non-abrasive toothpaste that contains pure ingredients like coconut oil. Just make sure the coconut oil is organic, unrefined or cold-press.
Fact #4: Floss daily and live longer.
Did you know that flossing your teeth daily may extend your life expectancy? Studies have shown that it can increase a person’s life expectancy by 6 years. Another interesting fact is that people who don’t floss miss cleaning 40% of their tooth surfaces.
Fact #5: Crocodiles can regrow their teeth.
When crocodiles lose teeth, it grows back. Imagine what it would be like if you were able to regrow your teeth. Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair!
Fact #6: People are getting their teeth tattooed!
While I don’t recommend this, many adventurous (or foolish!) people are having their crowns and teeth tattooed. Tattoo fans request to have their caps and crowns sent to laboratories to have images printed on their teeth. People have tattooed logos, names and their favorite graphics.
Fact #7: Left-handed people chew on their left side and right-handed people chew on the right side.
If you are left-handed, you more than likely chew food on the right side of your mouth. If you are right-handed, you chew on the right side. If you are ambidextrous (both right and left-handed), my guess is that you chew on both sides simultaneously? Who knows! It’s amazing what the human body can do.
Bonus: Women smile more than men. The average woman smiles about 62 times daily. Men smile about 8 times daily.
